What is AVIF
AVIF is a royalty-free image format based on the AV1 video codec that delivers excellent compression and modern features.
Compression and quality
AVIF often produces smaller files than WEBP or JPG at the same or better visual quality, especially for complex photos.
It supports both lossy and lossless modes plus 10-bit and HDR color.
Features and compatibility
AVIF includes alpha transparency, animation support and wide color gamut.
Support is growing in Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge but is not yet universal like WEBP or JPG.
When AVIF makes sense
Use AVIF on performance-critical sites where you can provide fallbacks or target modern browsers.
Test visually because aggressive compression can affect fine details in some images.
